DK- the way it ought to be!
Donkey Dong Jungle Beat is by far one of the most innovative games I have ever played. Its a 2D-style platformer with stunning 3D graphics in which you control Donkey Kong using a set of bongos.
Dont let the fact you are using bongos put you off- you still have major control over DK's movement. Within 5 minutes of playing the game- you'll have mastered the controls- its so unbelievably intuitive. Moving DK left/right is simply a case of tapping the appropriate bongo. The faster you tap, the faster he runs. Jumping is achieved by hitting both bongos simultaneously. Clapping sends out a sound wave which stuns enemies and can be used for other purposes like activating secrets. The real fun for me was where you have to drum both bongos like crazy. For example, if you jump on an enemy, hitting both bongos really fast causes DK to punch them like crazy.
The graphics are amazingly detailed. DK has never looked better. Fans of Donkey Kong Country etc. will notice similarly themed locations such as jungles, temples, underwater sections, beaches and more. Its really gorgeous. The music is spectacular too- and includes some classic DK tracks.
The main game flow is as follows. The game is split up into a number of kingdoms. Completing each kingdom requires that you play 2 platform style levels followed by a boss fight. Collecting a specific number of bananas in each kingdom allows you to unlock more kingdoms.
Some folk have been complaining that this game is too short. There is in fact quite alot of levels- each of which with their own unique charm. Whether its swimming through a sunken ship or riding some creature- each level is alot of fun. They aren't huge but you are likely to want to revisit areas to improve your score.
The boxing-style boss fights are a stroke of genius- and are my favourite bits in the game. Clapping lets you dodge incoming punches and tapping the left or right bongo makes DK punch the enemy with the appropriate hand. When the enemy is dizzy, its your opportunity to bang the bongos as fast as possible to deal out some serious damage.
If you like Donkey Kong- buy this game. If you don't like Donkey Kong- you will like this game. Within 5 minutes, this game will own you. Its a seriously original title and is pure Nintendo magic that'll make you want to play it again and again.
The best video game I've played in the last 10 years+
Video games continue to get more complicated and multi-layered. That's fine - it's natural, but technical progression doesn't mean you have a better game per se.
DK JB is immediately playable and has just the right learning curve - enough of a challenge to keep you coming back for more, but also really rewarding.
You get to control this classic character through various challenges and defeat increasingly harder bosses - nothing new in the design, but oh so innovative with the bongo controllers.
The last time I got so engrossed in a game, it was Super Mario World on the SNES. I'm a huge fan of the PS and PS2, but I have to say that sometimes, simpler really is better.
I'm 34 and I love this game. My 3 and 6 year old kids also love it. A classic.
at last a return for 2d platforming
donkey kong jungle beat is a classic style 2d platformer that is controlled with the free bongos you will get in the package.
to controll the game you need to master a few simple controlls wack the right drum to move right(the faster you drum the faster dk goes)left drum left, both together to jump and clap to grab bananas and stun enimeys how ever its not that simple! there will be obsticales in your way and loads of enimys to conker e.g a enimey is siting in the tree throwing coconuts at you so to defeat him you wait for him to throw a coconut then clap you hands the coconut will change direction then wack both drums to jump and punch the coconut back at him by wacking the right drum. Some levels you ride a goat thing where you have to wack the right drum to move faster jumping over obsticals whilst collecting banannas whilst being chased by a big monster the controlls work really welland makes a change from usall conrtoll methods. Each world is broken up in to 2 levels then a boss fight at the end, the boss fights are quite cool you first have to figure out how to defend your self against him then you can reply and deliver some damage of your own,to deliver damage you punch the boss by wacking left, right etc the faster you wack the more punches you deliver.
i recomend this game to anyone that likes retro style 2d platforming, something original, anyone that already has some bongos and to anyone who knows what a good game is £30 and includes bongos you cant go wrong
