SE210 sounds as good as the SE420! Save your money and get the 210s
I tried the SE210s as I'd sold my E4gs and was looking for something that would perform well with all styles of music, rather than just acoustic and classical. My friend just got the 420s and out of curiosity we compared both headphones side by side. Well, the 210s sound excellent considering they're the cheapest new Shure SE model and I didn't feel that the 420s were good value at all compared with the 210s. The 210s cost half as much as the 420s and are much better value for money. The produce a lovely full sound with vocals being beautifully presented and upfront - the 420s muffle the vocals slightly which I found distracting as I like the vocals to be clear.
I'm not a bass junkie and found the bass to be perfectly adequate, but I was also happy with the bass on the E4Gs. They don't have quite the same clarity in the mids as the E4Gs, but it is still much better than other heapdhones in the same price range. With the E4Gs, turning the volume up made them so 'bright' that my ears would 'ring' when I took them out - the 210s don't suffer that brightness at higher volumes which makes them a more suitable all-rounder for my listening preferences. If you're still considering buying the SE420s, at least try the 210s first. They're about half the price and sound just as good, but even better with vocals. You could save a lot of money.
What a difference
I bought these in Hong Kong during a wait in the airport for the second leg of a long haul flight... I spent the first leg of the flight using the original Apple earphones that came with my IPod... the less said about them, the better. I spent most of the time wanting to take them out and was relieved when I had.
There is no comparison between the sound quality I enjoyed during the second leg of the flight. The difference was amazing.
The first thing I noticed was how good the SE210s are at general noise isolation (could barley hear the planes engines without any music on.. or the person next to me snoring...)
The second thing I noticed was the comfort (after a bit of fiddling with the various sleeves), I hardly knew I was wearing them and wore them for probably 5 hours straight.
The third thing I noticed and most importantly, the absolutely brilliant sound.
The only problem with these things is they make anything else sound totally crap. You will find yourself smiling even when listening to music you don't even like, they sound that good.
Want my advice? Buy some.. you wont regret it. No need to pay more but certainly don't pay less, you 'Shure' get what you pay for. What are you waiting for?.....
Good NOT great!
So far on my mission to find the best under £100 earphones I have tried: Shure E2Cs, Sony EX90LP, Sennheiser CX300, V-moda Vibes and Goldring VX200s. I would say these SE210s by Shure sit somewhere at the top end of the ones I have tried in terms of quality and audio satisfaction. They fit very snuggly and are incredible at isolating background noise so are great for commuting or using on plane journeys.
HOWEVER.....the sound quality is not great and certainly not worthy of making the RRP of these near £100. There is not enough bass even after trying many different configurations. The mid-high end sounds strained and when you turn up your MP3 player you can really hear these start to fall down. The V-modas are probably the best I have tried so far as they give the best quality vs comfort. They do not isolate as well as these but if you are listening to your favourite tracks you will be diappointed by the lack of low end and the strained mid-high range. It is a shame as the build quality and accessories given with these are excellent.
