Pretty effective straightening without excessive heat
Before using this product I read a few descriptions about it and saw that it was being advertised for adding volume, body, straightness and shine to shorter styles. Since I have long hair I thought I was going to be disappointed with it, but actually I was quite impressed.
It was really easy to use, with three different heat settings (although I was disappointed that there was only one speed setting, I thought there perhaps could have been a slightly lower setting for more detailed styling). Anyway, not a major disadvantage.
This styler is quite unusual in that it fuses together the concepts of ceramic straightening (normally only found in hot irons) with the air flow of a standard hair dryer. It also incorporates a comb-like effect into this, making styling easy and managable. In the past I've used a hairdryer to get my hair dry, then a comb used with ceramic straighteners to get my hair poker straight. The comb feature is wide, which is good as your hair doesn't get tangled as you use the styler.
This styler also uses the ionic technology that many dryers seem to have as a feature these days. I do think it helps to add shine.
I think that this styler is pretty effective if you want volumised shiny, relatively straight sleek hair. If you want it poker straight I think ceramic irons are still more effective - but this is a convenient time/effort saver, and doesn't have the inconvenient expensive replacement gas cylinders that some small hair stylers have had in the past (this plugs into the wall). I would also imagine it isn't half as destructive to hair as placing something like the scorching hot GHD irons on it every day, as this is much cooler.
Overall, pretty impressed!
Thumbs up!
The following review comes courtesy of my adult daughter, who has long and naturally curly hair......
My first impressions of the Babyliss Airstyler (ie before using) were that it seemed useful for people who perhaps have straight-ish hair, not too think and would straighten their hair regularly anyway, hence a good time saver (this was largely influenced by the television advert). I have long, thick, curly hair and rarely straighten it (was done for the first time only a year ago), so I don't really know these things work and don't feel it particularly applies to me. However my dad got this for me and so naturally I decided to try it out.
Normally when I get my hair straightened a friend will do it, blow drying it straight first and then straightening it, and it does take a while. I also don't really like the result as I usually find it leaves my hair quite flat (particularly in contrast to my natural hairstyle).
When using the Babyliss Airstyler I did it myself (first time ever!), and it was really easy to use. I assumed it wouldn't dry that well but it was fine, worked very well. I also thought the straightening wouldn't be so good because it's not using flat plates, but in fact I found it better than normal straighteners as it leaves body in your hair; this is on the box, but I thought, "How though?!" - but it really does! It looks more natural in my opinion.
It also only took 2/3 of the usual time - probably quicker if I had someone else doing it as I usually do. I would say if you want poker straight hair then you may need to use flat plate straighteners after this, but I would still consider this a good investment as it cuts down time, much easier than blow-drying and then straightening (and you can leave it as it is if you're not after the poker straight look at other times).
The results don't last as long as the longer method, I'm assuming because the hair is not exposed to so much heat, but again it remained for 2/3 of the usual time - for me, it's usually 3 days that my hair remains straight, this time it was 2. Still, very much worth it.
To sum up it's easier, better and more natural results, lasts long enough and generally speaking much better than expected and very good value.
Oh Babyliss !
This product has a number of pros and cons,
if I start with the pros:
The product is easy to use
Quick to set up
Convenient
Adds volume to hair
Doesn't dry hair out so it becomes brittle like a traditional straighter.
Easy to do different styles
Good length from plug to straighter/drier.
Cons:
It needs practice to get the end completely smooth.
The handle could be a little smaller
With fine hair needs more manual intervention to keep it between the teeth as the air tends to blow it out.
In summary on the whole the product is very good with a little practice mastering the art of holding the product. The product comes with a positive recommendation with the pros easily out weighing the cons.
