Product Description

Retail is amazing. It is immediate, exciting, risky, and downright tough. Running shops gets into the bloodstream. But at a time when retail takes credit for saving whole economies it is still possibly the least understood of all business practices. Smart Retail is your ticket to a better retail life.

'A really practical and helpful guide, essential reading for anyone involved in retailing'
Charles Dunstone, CEO, The Carphone Warehouse

'A wonderful insight into the world of retailing. A fun and inspiring read, particularly for those close to retail.'
Vittorio Radice, Executive Director, Marks & Spencer (former Chief Executive, Selfridges)

Julian Richer, Chairman and Founder, Richer Sounds

This book is the first 'how to' retail handbook. It uncovers the key elements that separate the great retailers from the average, the killer teams from the also-rans and the High Street success stories from the back street strugglers. Covering everything from creating the ultimate in-store experience to understanding your customer and from promotional strategies to building energised and motivated teams, this is the book that will equip store managers, aspiring team-workers, retail entrepreneurs and indeed anybody who sells direct to customers, with practical winning ideas and strategies for retail success.

'A book about doing it.'
Allan Leighton, Chairman, Royal Mail (former CEO, ASDA).

'I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.'
Simon Stephens, District Manager, Sunglass Hut

'This is a great book which delivers sensible pragmatic advice applicable to all retail sectors at all levels'

Customer Reviews

For team members and managers in any job, anywhere..5
I purchased this book after being offered a managerial role in retail. Knowing little about the industry, I was looking for a book that could tell me everything... from shop floor to staffing.

This book not only taught me all I needed to know but gave me confidence and passion to go ahead and be a great team member. I made notes all over it as by page 2 I knew I wasn´t going to be passing it on to anyone else!

Easy reference, interesting to read - I took it on holiday - excellent section on people management and lots of information and advice that would apply to most office jobs, work teams and managers everywhere, not just in the retail industry. Also written by a normal guy who has had a long and successful career in retail, not a stuffy professor with a PhD. Thoroughly recommended.

Great tips and ideas to transform your business.5
I have just read 'Smart Retail' and think it is brilliant. It is a very practical book on how to maximise your sales as well as how to motivate your staff.

As a Business Teacher I have used this book alot in my A level Business and AVCE Retail teaching. It is full of good examples and cases studies which help distill good practice. I was particularly impressed with the the section on how to bring 'fun' into your job descriptions - sounds a contradiction in terms know. How fun is your job description? The book described how re-writing job descriptions motivated saturday workers and turned them into an enthusiastic and successful sales team.

So go on, clip on the button and get a copy now. You wont regret it.

Essential reading for retailers5
"Read Richard Hammond's book last March and thought at the time: 'Why couldn't I have read this when I entered the industry?' The book really should be positioned as essential reading for anybody entering, or even trying to sell to, the retail industry."
