Hayward and Ryland's Marine Fauna of the British Isles and North-West Europe has become a classic in the marine reference literature. The same editors have now prepared a shorter version suitable for individual purchase and field use. Rapid and easy identification of all but the rarest of the marine animals found on the sea shores and shallow sublittoral zones of north-west Europe is made possible by the provision of simple dichotomous keys, individual descriptions, and high quality line and stipple drawings. The occurrence and distribution is given for each species, and reference provided to the specialist literature which will facilitate more detailed study and coverage of the additional, rare species not covered in the book. The book is especially suited to student and amateur use, allowing identification of the majority of marine animals. No other guide is available at this level.

Almost fully comprehensive, well done indeed
This is by far the best one stop shop for any marine biologist whether amateur or professional. Each chapter comprehensively covers a single phylum or major group and additionally there is a great key for finding to which of these groups your specimen belongs. Throughout the book there are most helpful identification keys, great group, family and species descriptions accompanied by clear, suitably dimensioned line drawings. All features necessary for identification are included and while not every species is included in the single volume paperback version it is about as big a book as anyone would want to get wet by taking into the field or get messed up in the wet lab. Finally, the authors have included an exhaustive reference list for the serious biologist to take their interests further. If you know all that this book has to offer you really can call yourself an expert!
Essential for any Marine Biology Degree
As a student of Marine Biology this book is highly recommend for practical classes. It has detailed notes and drawings of each organism. It can sometimes however be difficult to locate the correct organism and you can only look something up in the index if you know it's scientific name! Other than this the only other problem I have is that Bangor is spelt incorrectly in the contributors section of the book!!
Better than most, but not comprehensive
I have wanted a copy of this book for a long time to help with marine ID from survey photos. It covers many more species than any of our other books and the keys have proved very useful with several mollusc species. It is not as comprehensive as I would like however, I was very surprised to discover that there were no slipper lobsters in it, even though they were included in most of the other books we use.
