    Excellent little camera5
The other reviewer who only gave the camera one star must have been unlucky. I have wanted this camera for months after it was given a glowing 5 out of 5 in a magazine. It is now relatively inexpensive and a real bargain.

There are so many things to like about this camera. The controls are really well thought out and they have dispensed with the mode wheel (auto, Av, Tv, portrait, sport, etc) that one finds on so many cameras. Most people only use auto unless they have accidentally turned the wheel to a different setting. This camera has all sorts of modes but they are accessed through the on screen menu which actually includes simple instructions and explanations of the modes. One mode I was especially pleased with was the document mode which is good for photographing documents. I regularly photograph pencil sketches I do and I have never managed to get such good results with my other cameras which all cost more that this one.

There are lots of in camera editing features, most of which one will never use but this can automatically stitch together up to five shots into a single panorama. Very easy to do very good results and again this was one of the features that sold me on this camera.

This is not the smallest of cameras but it is perfectly small enough to carry around with you and not be a burden. The up side of being larger is that it has a fairly big screen on the back (there is no viewfinder so you do use it all the time). The time from pressing the shutter button and the actual taking of the photo is reasonably good and better than many digital cameras which seem to spend an age focusing before taking the photo.

The image quality is really good and the noise in the images is minimal.

As a Mac user I am frequently disappointed by the quality of the bundled software with electronic products but the applications that come with the camera are very good. If you already have iPhoto you don't really need any of it but if you do not there are features for managing and manipulating your photos which can be used with the camera and to handle images from other sources. There is even a short term internet based photo sharing facility where you can "email" images to friends but the photos go onto a web gallery and the email to friends merely contains thumbnails with links to the internet gallery. The gallery lasts for 30 days and is then automatically deleted (which does not affect your original photos on your computer). For many people this will be a really useful feature to show photos to others who live elsewhere.

Overall this is a great product which shows HP has put a lot of thought into the use and experience as well as packing in an amazing feature set. It feels sturdy and the build quality seems very good. The packaging is fairly minimal too which is a good thing being mainly the outer cardboard box and a couple of bubble wrap sleeves.

    Good family camera4
We bought this because we felt our 10-year-old HP digital camera was just a bit too old. The fact that we'd had them so long tells you something about HP build quality and technology - so far I'm hopeful that this one (which we've had about 6 months) will be equally durable.

The camera is fairly intuitive to use, and the controls are easy to manage for people with slim fingers, though in some cases quite small. The very large-fingered might find the buttons at the top, which are flush with the camera, difficult to manage.

The camera works to some extent with basic Windows software (I have Win XP), but there are some glitches that make it difficult to download large numbers of pictures at the same time, and impossible to download the short video clips. The camera comes with software of course - this is only an issue if, like me, you are the sort who tries to get things up and running right out of the box.

The picture quality is excellent, and the zoom works well. The screen on the back is very large (taking up almost the whole back of the camera), allowing you to get a reasonable idea of the finished picture quality. The light adjustment / flash is very reliable.

Ours arrived with the wrong camera guide (not in English), though it had the right camera dock guide, and of course the software with the manual.

The camera includes most of what you will need, apart from extra memory, and a camera case. The lack of a case annoys me - surely they could supply a simple sleeve to keep the camera safe until I had time to buy a decent case?

On the other hand, my impatience to use it has meant that the camera has gone into various handbags, satchels etc, with no harm done to it - so it has given it a chance to prove its robustness.

My only gripe with this camera is the shutter speed. Our main reason for replacing our old camera was the slow shutter speed, and while this one is a good deal quicker, it's still too slow for candid photos. We like taking pictures of our kids, but those cute expressions are too fleeting for this camera. That is the one reason that I would guess we will replace this camera before we've had it 10 years again - otherwise it's the business.

    Poor1
i just returned this item. it says it is a 8mp camera but i dnt beleive this for one min. the focus is appauling. the first one i got through froze all the time so i asked for a replacement. this one was not much better. It is too big and the editting features are pointless and complcate the camera. the quality of picture is poor considering it is advertised as a 8mp. it failed even to focus on writing on a piece of paper. Awaful. im going back to my casio. much better quality and so much more compact and simple.
