Product Description

The appeal of woodturning is simple: with only a few hand tools and a lathe, remarkable results can be quickly achieved, including beautiful bowls, boxes in the round, lamp bases and furniture parts. And for over 20 years, woodturners have been turning to Richard Raffan for expert advice and inspiration. Revised and updated to embrace the increase and improvement in turning tools and lathes now on the market, this updated and expanded edition of his 1985 classic covers everything from the lathe - how it works and how to choose the right model - to fixings, cutting tools, safety, measuring, centrework and more. Raffan also includes a brand new chapter on crafting hollow vessels.

Customer Reviews

Woodturning yes. Bach no.3
I have read some of Richard Raffan's woodturning books and rate his knowledge, experience and authorship. It seemed a good idea to buy a dvd to supplement the library in an effort to improve my turning skills. The dvd takes us through how to sharpen chisels and gouges, movement at the lathe, skew chisel use, gouge manipulation, attaching stock to the lathe, spindle work between centres and bowl turning. Raffan demonstrates his wonderful craftsmanship with an air of authority and well-presented demonstration. Any aspiring woodturner would learn from watching his excellent skills in this video. Sadly there is a down side. At many points in the video, the observer is subject to a loud, intrusive and totally tasteless synthesiser. The performer's rendition of Gavottes 1 and 2 from Bach's Sixth Cello Suite can only be described as an affront on musical taste from any viewpoint. A very good video on woodturning including a perfect demonstration of how not to play Bach.

Some of the techniques this guy uses are just plain dangerous. Leaning over a spining lathe with cuffs loose, DRilling spinning wood by holding a drill bit in pliers ....
I agree with the above the ridiculous synthesiser music is an affront to music and an insult to Bach
