About the Actor
Lofty joined the Parachute Regiment in 1958. He applied for service with the Special Air Service Regiment in 1959 and set a record as the youngest person ever to pass selection at the age of 18. He served with 22 SAS for 26 years and saw active service worldwide, in every theatre of operations and special operations required of the British Army between 1959 and 1985. Amongst other things, Lofty was Sergeant Major, B Squadron 22 SAS, Sergeant Major 22 SAS Training Wing, Head of Operational Research 22 SAS, he set up the SP Team (Counter Hi-Jack) and set up the SAS Counter-Terrorist Team as well as training the first members of the US Green Berets who then returned to the USA to form the famous Delta Force (US Special Forces). Lofty also ran the famed SAS Selection Course, deciding who was fit to join the Regiment. In addition, Lofty ran the Survival Training School for 22 SAS at Hereford, specialising in all aspects of survival training (land, sea, jungle, desert, arctic, wilderness wherever a special forces soldier or civilian might find themselves). After retiring from 22 Special Air Service Regiment, Lofty set up the Survival School at Hereford and has since trained survival instructors and consultants, expedition members, overseas survival training specialists, military and civilian from across the globe. Highly entertaining and educational, and the kids loved it!
I bought this DVD for my wife who's been in to all things outdoors since a child. She has all of Lofty Wiseman's books along with the more recent Ray Mears collection so when I stumbled onto this release I knew she would like it.

We haven't taken advantage of any of the navigation features of this DVD yet, only watching it through from start to finish. However, there's so much in it I'm sure we'll be going back to bits of it having tried a few bits and pieces this morning in the garden.

The presentation style and quality is excellent. I sit through many shows of this genre and rarely pay as much attention as I managed throughout this disk. Lofty's experience and personality really kept my interest as you get the feeling that when he's sharing his knowledge, that it's based on his own life's experiences. Another aspect of this presentation which I enjoyed was it's ability to make sense of all of the skills demonstrated. It gave us all an easy way to organise ourselves if faced with an emergency situation. I've no doubt that many people know how to light fires or make shelters but I for one wouldn't have known what to do first or why.

I'll be getting another copy for my father for Christmas as it offers good value for money and I know he'll love it. He's been watching Ray Mears and Bear Grylls on TV for a while and according to my wife at least, Lofty Wiseman blows them out of the water.

Simply 'the best' presentation of survival skills on DVD I've ever seen
There are many, perhaps dozens of survival and bushcraft videos and DVD's on the market. So parting with almost £20 for this one was only justified by the fact it was done by John 'Lofty' Wiseman - a man who's books I've loved for years. I've really enjoyed other DVD's in the past such as Ray Mears Vanishing World, Ray Mears Goes Walkabout, Essential Bushcraft and even Bushcraft Survival by Ray Mears - you might guess, I'm a big Ray Mears fan. But, although I love much of what Ray Mears has done, I'm always left wanting to know more about how some of the skills he demonstrates are actually done - for real so to speak. As well as loving Ray Mears I'm also a huge fan of the 'SAS Survival' books which is where my enjoyment for the subject originated.

So what's great about this DVD? Well let me tell you, there's so much to love about it I'm not sure where to start! Firstly, unlike the Ray Mears stuff this presentation is all about making sure the viewer can learn as well as enjoy watching. Everything is demonstrated as if you were actually on a Trueways survival course with Lofty Wiseman. Organising all of the skills based on proven survival theory, each section summarises the essentials, highlighting what's important and explaining why. Then things progress to practical demonstrations and each section wraps it all up summarising the essential points again to ensure you're got it. The whole DVD runs this way with a useful summary of all of the principles at the end. This alone makes this DVD great, but there's more...

Unlike anything else I have seen, this DVD has a fully navigable, interactive type menu system. So if you're interested in watching or learning a specific skill or demonstration you can - just like using the index of a book. This makes the DVD not only entertaining to watch, but it allows the huge amount of teaching content and entertaining anecdotes from Lofty's past to be navigated to with pinpoint accuracy.

Many people will undoubtedly never use this unique and highly valuable navigation feature, but for those interested in learning survival or bushcraft skills rather than just enjoying the visual demonstration, this DVD should be the top of your list.

With well over 2 hours, packed from start to finish with numerous bonus skills and features seamlessly integrated into the navigation system, this DVD scores an easy 10 out of 10.
