Haile was born in Ethiopia in 1965 and lived there until she was eleven years old. When the Emperor was deposed by a military coup, Haile's father was shot while 'resisting arrest'. Barely surviving, he escaped with his family and settled in central Minnesota where they struggled with the cultural and financial strain of their drastically changed circumstances. Haile grew up in America, attended Williams College and went on to graduate from Harvard Law School. In 2001, she was the first member of her family to return to Ethiopia. Rebecca Haile's book brings into focus the challenges and consequences of three decades of political upheaval in Ethiopia.

Well worth reading if you're travelling to Ethiopia
Just finished reading this book. Part travelogue, part history, part memoir, this book works in a way I hadn't expected. Having travelled to Ethiopia I felt the author got under the skin of Ethiopia in a way a travel book never could. She offers insightful thoughts that I was never able to get my head around when I was in this beautiful country. Particularly her piece on Lalibela where she contrast the magnificent scenery and the wonder of the rock hewn churches, with the abject poverty. It a little slow to get going, where she struggled with meeting her family. But after that it became a real page turner. Well worth reading for anyone with more than a passing interest in Ethiopia.
