Average customer review:Product Description
An updated and revised look at how to uncover your karmic destiny through the symbols and metaphors of the tarot. This 2nd edition includes a new chapter on choosing the right tarot deck for you (or designing your own) plus new sample readings and yearly readings for 2004 and 2005. It also provides a stronger focus on the tarot as a tool for self-understanding. The tarot is bigger than ever before, with new decks being published that are works of art, such as the "Lord of the Rings" tarot decks and dozens of New Age oracle cards that are take-offs on the Rider Waite deck that has been popular for a long time.

An enjoyable read
I would have given this book 5 stars, but for a couple of gripes. Firstly, regarding the Celtic Cross spread interpretation, sometimes the authors get a little fuzzy with their explanations. Also, in the Gypsy Wish Spread, they don't explain whether the 9 of Cups has to appear in a specific area or whether its appearance per se indicates success. Perhaps because they got carried away with their enthusiasm, speaking of which, this book comes across as very enthusiastic and upbeat, which makes it a real pleasure to browse through. My second gripe is that the layout, which I believe is standard for all Complete Idiot's books, with its lack of clearly designated sections (for example, tabs to indicate chapters would have been helpful), means I have to flip lots of pages to get to what I want. The alternative, of course, is to flag everything important with Post-It notes and create a real mess. All in all, however, if you're looking for a comprehensive, reader-friendly, upbeat guide to the Tarot, I would recommend this. But first, you need to get yourself the Rider-Waite or Universal Waite Tarot pack - something the cover or blurb doesn't tell you beforehand... other packs won't work because the explanations and interpretations all relate to just this pack.
a strong and easy to follow introduction to the tarot.
as a newcomer to the tarot this is the first book i have bought in order to learn the skill and so far i must say that it has been easy to follow and understand. it starts of by giving you an introduction to what tarot is all about and then goes on to encourage you to use your own intuition as to what you see in the cards before actually giving you the supposed actual meanings and the book contains many exercises in order to help you do this.
the meanings behind the cards given are well writen and consicse and understandable, the only crib i have here is that it could have gone on to explain some of the tricker cards in more detail.
the book also gives you a number of introductions to traditional tarot spreads like the celtic cross spread and the three card spread. again the only crib here is that the book could have gone in to more detail on how to what the cards mean in particular positions rather than just give you examples to follow.
The book contains interesting chapters on the link between numerology and astrology and useful tips on how to conduct readings and what deck to use. the book is also i felt formatted like a textbook which i found useful as it aids learning better.
This book works in conjunction with the reider waite tarot deck so if your going to use this book make sure you have this deck.
overall i felt that this book provided a good foundation to understanding the basic principles behind tarot and is excellent for any beginner, but i feel that i will have to read further books in order to aid my understanding of the cards further.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Tarot (Complete idiot's guides) Probably the only guide to Tarot reading you will ever need. Easy instructions with exercises to follow at every step. Well worth the money.
