Useful piece of kit.
This has been a great buy for me, I have managed to get the kids to dump all their music, movies and 12 megapixel photographs on this to free up space on our PC.
I still have a small issue to resolve, my PC keeps trying to boot off of this before the main hard drive but if I get time to sort this out it will be perfect.

An external hard drive that actually looks nice.
Okay, there are a lot of reviews for this product already and a lot of misinformation so I thought I'd try to clear the air a bit and lay down the key points for external hard drives:
* You will not get 1TB of storage on this product. The industry measures 1TB as 1000 GB, but your computer measures it as 1024GB. The same goes for GB into MB. The true capacity of this drive when formatted will be in the region of 930GB.
* It comes with a multi-plug. Follow the instructions to clip off the USA plug and clip on the UK plug. No tools are required (except fingers) and most children of 5 could complete the task.
* The drive turns on and off with your computer and 'sleeps' when inactive to reduce power consumption and heat. In sleep mode it uses less power than your mouse, but if for whatever reason you want to turn it of simply right-click the drive icon and select 'safely remove'.
* Don't let the 'I lost all my files' reviews put you off. Some hard drives do fail. This is the same for all manufactures and cannot be avoided. Valuable data should always be backed up on two separate devices.
* If you are planning to store video on the drive it would be a good idea to format the drive to NTFS straight out of the box, don't worry about overwriting the files that come on the drive, you don't need them.
Compared to other drives on the market this one is nicer to look at, and thanks to it's sleep mode, quieter and cooler than most. Getting (nearly) a Gigabyte per pound isn't too bad either!
Great piece of hardware.
I have now got four of these drives. That should be all that needs said. I bought my first one of these terabyte drives over a year ago and have never had the slightest problem with it. The drive works great as soon as it's plugged in. I use these drives to store music, videos, photographs and software and have never had a problem or lost any data. The lack of a cooling fan is very good as it lets the drive run almost completely silent. The drive spins down after a few minutes of idleness but takes only a few seconds to get back up to speed. Only has about 930GB of space but it's normal to not get the full capacity that's advertised.
A few pointers to get started with it though -
- Reformat the drive before using it (to NTFS if you want though not nessecary can be handy when dealing with dvd files etc).
- Don't bother with the software provided with the drive. It works just fine with both Windows XP and Vista with no additional software.
- Keep it in a fairly well ventilated or open spot as without the coolng fan it can build up quite a bit of heat which can damage the drive.
