Synopsis
Based on a true story of heroism and sacrifice, SAINTS AND SOLDIERS was an acclaimed hit on the film festival circuit, winning over 10 best film awards around the country. In some of the most vicious days of World War II, four American soldiers survive a massacre of prisoners and remain trapped behind enemy lines. When they encounter a hiding British officer with valuable intelligence information, the group decides to try and sneak back into friendly territory with the data. However, that proposition is rife with difficulties: the group is mostly unarmed, the weather is freezing cold, they have no food, and the woodlands are crawling with German soldiers. Can each of the men overcome their fear and the odds to deliver the information that may save hundreds of Allied lives? SAINTS AND SOLDIERS is an independently made war film which proves that verisimilitude and emotional impact in the genre is not entirely the province of Hollywood.

Save your time and money
If you're interested in WWII history, spend half an hour on the internet reading about the actual events of the Malmedy massacre (on which this film claims to be based) rather than wasting your time with this film.
The makers are apparently at pains to point out that the equipment, uniforms etc. are authentic for the period so it's a shame they never did any research into English accents! The British pilot was nothing less than a caricature of Biggles.
The other characters were so one-dimensional and cliched that I actually ended up not caring about any of them, and the conclusion to each of the characters' "stories" was so predictable that it was close to being an insult to the intelligence.
As for the long list of awards on the cover ... I'm afraid that such awards as the Temecula Valley International Film Festival "Best Feature Film" don't really count for much!
Good Film
Saints and Soldiers is not a great war film, but a good one.
Instead of filling every scene with action it prefers to work on the characters relationships. Yes there is enough action for die hard war film fans, but it is a little more than that. Deacon's character and relationship within the group is particularly interesting and the English Raf pilots relationship with the American hick soldier grows to a great climax.
The scenery is kept simple and the direction is neat. The acting and main script may be a little ham in places and the cast are not exactly oscar winners, (although the actor playing Deacon was quite good), however the RAF pilot was appalling - where did he get that accent (what ho), but that said it should not put people off what is quite a good story line.
In all a good film and well worth adding to your collection and I am sure I will dust it off and watch again at somepoint.
waste.
Save your time , save your money and save your effort, the hype promised much but delivered nothing.
