Customer Reviews
Some excellent information but could be more specific.
This was one of the first how-to books I got on dyeing. Mind you it took so long to come I'd figured out a lot myself by the time I read it. They seem to be interesting folk and were at one time members of The Farm community in Tennessee. Home birth fans will know of Ina May Gaskin the Farm's midwife and author of Spiritual Midwifery. On the book itself: It is very strong on pleating and tying. The information on the actual dyes is not specific enough. One is encouraged to experiment, however basic recipies are not given. For instance there is a discussion of how < badly mixed orange>, not a direct quote but close enough, can look very unprofessional in tie dyes but there is no recipe for orange at all! And from much experiment I can save you the trouble of thinking 50% each red and yellow will work. Which procion dyes to use as primaries is not discussed. Most frustrating of all, the text is illustrated with tie dye mandalas which I'd love to be able to do, but she keeps mum on how to.. The pictures are adequate but more colour would be nice. One sequence has a print in mirror image in the middle of the series whic makes it difficult to follow. Rainbow Tie dye by Sulfiati Harris is a better primer I think. On the other hand I learned things from this book I saw nowhere else.
Buyer beware!
I was very let down when I saw this book. it is basically the same book she wrote a few years ago. It has more history and chit chat...but I couldn't find any new patterns. Her last book said that certain patterns would be available in her next book, coming out soon. Maybe I missed one? I am surprised that a spiritual community would be deceptive in their marketing of this book. While it is an excellent book, it is not a new book.
