Helpful for those writing short stories and articles5
Adele Ramet, in the second edition of this book, considers the differences between articles and short stories and what they have in common. She explains how articles can be constructed; keeping to the point, laying the material out logically and writing to length. An analysis sheet shows how women's magazines can be examined to check on the type of article that might be acceptable, holidays for example or travel or food and drink. Adele emphasises that rewriting does not only mean tidying to produce the best possible article, but also to adapt the material for maybe a dozen more slanted for completely different markets. The second half of the book gives advice on short story markets, guidelines and themes to avoid. There are not as many openings for short stories and it is all the more important to examine the magazines so that the readers recognise characters as similar to people they know and backgrounds that are familiar. Research and record keeping are discussed and there are examples of analysis sheets, planners and query letters. Adele suggests that joining writers' groups, associations and societies and attending lectures and conferences can result in valuable contacts. A well laid out book in good clear print with a glossary, list of useful addresses and an index. A useful addition to the shelf of anyone wishing to write and sell short stories and articles.
