Synopsis
From the acclaimed action director of HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, comes THE WARLORDS: an electrifying saga that unites the talents of Jet Li (ROMEO MUST DIE, ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA) and Andy Lau (INFERNAL AFFAIRS, THE DUEL). Set in mid-19th Century China: a time in which the population live under a dark, oppressive regime orchestrated by the Qing Dynasty; a time when the people fought back; the era of the Taiping Rebellion.

As the newly-instated official governor, General Pang (Jet Li) finds himself in the most compromising of situations: at the centre of a love triangle with his sworn blood brother Zhao Er-Hu (Andy Lay) and his wife Lian (Xu Jinglei),

Customer Reviews

A rare combination.5
This film is indeed a rare combination of spectacular action sequences, both on a small and epic scale, combined with a script that provides not only depth to characters, thus allowing actors to demonstrate their talents to the full, but also the background within court circles of plotting, and counter plotting.
Anyone who doubts Jet Li's ability as an actor will have to revise their opinion on seeing his performance in this film.
Anyone who has admired Andy Lau's performances will not be disappointed.
The Picture Quality of this Blu-ray disc is excellent, and is well worth the premium over the SDDVD.

An epic and sad tale5
Warlords is a beautiful film, the sets and the costumes are very rich and the acting is superb, especially Jet Li, Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro. There is a lot of blood and guts (and mud) in this film, some great battle action sequences, but it does not seek to glorify war, but shows it for what it is, raw and bleak. The story opens in china around the year 1860, during a time of rebellion and chaos, so there is a mix of traditional sword fighting and archers, verses guns and cannons. I don't want to give too much of the plot away, but if you like films about heavily outnumbered forces fighting against a larger and superior foe, then this is for you!

I did not see anything wrong with the quality of this blu-ray film it is spot on and sharp, it is shot artistically and the film grain you see in some parts of the picture is to do with the types of film stock they used and the lighting and lenses etc... in other words it was intentional. The only movies that do not have any film grain in them are 100% computer generated movies, because they do not use film stock to create the movie, except when printed onto film stock to be projected in a movie theater - then they have film grain!

So don't let film grain put you off buying this Blu-Ray, it just makes the ride and the world of the warlords more gritty, more human. It also creates a stark contrast between the warlords world, and that of the far removed world of the Empresses clean, orderly palace, in Beijing.

Not full HD as usual3
As usual the quality of the BlueRay was no better than DVD. Those few CGI moments are the only time 1080p kicks in. Great film though.
