What has happened to 9 below Zero??
I haven't heard any 9 Below Zero since the '80's but I saw this CD sitting on a record shop shelf and I bought it. It was one of those moments of huge disappointment when I got home and stuck it in the player. If you like ZZ Top then you'll love this album. But if you like good old British R'n'B or '79 mod revival stuff then don't even bother. Just stick to their old stuff.
Pick and choose your fave(s)
This effort is really nothing like Don't Point Your Finger or the early live work. That's the first difficulty for the new listener. Second, though some of the titles seem really promising (e.g. "We Rock The House"--surely that's awesome?), in fact the music seems disappointing. The standout, to my mind, is "Go Girl." It's unforgettable and also, in its way, un-put-downable. I kept trying to decide at first whether it was really cool, or whether it was really a geeky attempt to BE cool. Sort of like my experience with oysters: "I'm not sure I like this." (Have another one.) "I'm not sure I like this." (Have another one.) The album's worth it just for that song.
An over produced and generally average album...
NBZ are genuinely the best live band on the circuit at the moment. It is a tragedy that their studio output does little justice to their skills as musicians and performers. Money or the man, Rock the house and Cinnamon Man are good tunes (if slightly over produced) but bear little resemblance to the live renditions of the same songs. As a huge fan of NBZ I will continue to buy their CDs - I just hope they eventually capture the magic that is NBZ - this album isn't it.
