Customer Reviews

Jacqueline Du Pre's playing is like a song5
This CD is unusual, in that it contains many of the shorter and less well known pieces of cello repertoire. There is a wide range of styles, from the serene Song Without Words, to the lively Jota, this CD is well worth listening to. Jacqueline Du Pre's interpretations are lyrical, and her playing is a delight. I don't think that 5 stars can do this justice!

A good collection of du Pre recordings, but EMI have since released better value.4

The inspiration referred to in the title was started by the 1965 recording of Elgar's cello concerto in E minor, which naturally features on this 2 disc release. Also included are two further concertos, both of which are important pieces in today's cello repertoire, the Dvorak concerto and Haydn's concerto in D.

So much more is offered too, such as the transcription from organ of the adagio from Bach's Toccata, Adagio and Fugue, and The Swan from Saint Saens' Carnival of the Animals.

However, since the 1996 release of this `Inspirations' compilation EMI have marketed many other du Pre compilations, most notable being the 17CD `The Complete EMI Recordings' which includes these recordings any many, many more, so that is the set I would recommend to hear these great recordings.
