NANA MOUSKOURI RETURNS HOME TO ATHENS
At last,the DVD of the 1984 returning home to Athens concert by
Greeces best known international artiste. What a setting the theatre just below the Acroplolis,I was there not long ago and it's
just a perfect setting for such an historic homecoming,as she had not played in her home country for twenty years.She wears for the first part of the concert a long white flowing dress that looks very traditionally Greek in style which just adds to the occasion. The concert is a
really wonderful evening, Nana singing many of her best known songs
with many also by Greeces best known composers. Her band is really
excellent as well with many close ups on any solo playing.The beautiful arrangement of Amazing Grace,the clarity of voice on Ave Maria, White Rose Of Athens in three different languages seems even more powerful in such a setting,alsa a medley that includes Zorbas Dance. For any who enjoy Nana this is a wonderful
DVD to enjoy again and again. The bonus items recorded in 2002
for German television see her singing in many Greek locations
including Athens of course,but also Corfu etc.
One thing to watch,this is not filmed in wide sceen but in standard format.so beware as if you don't change it everyone looks a bit on the short and stubby size. Sound is excellent throughout.I bought the double CD of this concert last year in Greece,but to visually see it in such a setting on one very special night is just not to be missed as it,s said that Nana's current tour is her last before she retires from touring,shame,
as live she is one of the truly great live artistes in the world.
Athens and Nana Mouskouri the perfect concert and the right setting,five stars all the way.

Nana's Historical Concert
Nana Mouskouri is a very special person; she is a true legend and if I may add a great ambassador for her country `Greece'. This album encapsulates the euphoria of Nana's triumphant return in July 1984 to her native city Athens after an absence of twenty years. Staged in the Herod Atticus Theatre at the foot of the Acropolis in the presence of the Greek President Konstantin Karamanlis and Minister for Culture former actress and colleague, Melina Mercouri. This CD encompasses many of her favourite Greek songs which include Athina, Aspri Mera, Milisse Mou and a medley that includes the White Rose of Athens sung in three languages tailed-out with Zorba's Dance - Great stuff!
Her repertoire generally expresses peace and love, performed with great passion. Her exquisite voice is pure, simple and true. Nana's rendition of Amazing Grace, Ava Maria, Je Chante avec toi Liberte and the classical Casta Diva from Bellini's opera `Norma' are simply stunning.
This is a superb CD of a truly magical evening, which is also available on DVD.
I have had the pleasure of seeing Nana in concert on many occasions in my own city Belfast. In her farewell concert it was a very poignant moment for me presenting Nana with a white rose after she had sung 'The White Rose of Athens' the song that introduced me into her music all those years ago - it felt like a chapter of my life had finally closed. To a new generation, the name Nana Mouskouri may not even register. This lovely lady has sold more records worldwide than any other female artist! Three hundred and fifty million discs - not bad eh?
Nana Moukouri in the 70's was a superstar and for me she will always be a superstar and this CD is certainly rates very high in my prized collection of her music. Treat yourself and buy it!
