My fave albums of 2005: July - October
Give BloodGive Blood by Brakes
Buy new: £8.58 / Used from: £0.99
16 tracks in half an hour, with not a second wasted. Expletive-ridden indie-punk from a supergroup from Brighton, with a bit of Americana chucked in for good measure.
IllinoiseIllinoise by Sufjan Stevens
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £6.50
An amazing trek around Illionis, part of his plan to write an album for each of the 50 U.S. states. Bursting with ideas, both lyrical reflections on Illinois and musical explorations.
PicaresquePicaresque by The Decemberists
Buy new: £5.78 / Used from: £4.85
Original and tuneful indie folk music. Most tracks deal with different characters from the Decemberists' warped minds, like the lovelorn Eli The Barrow Boy or the injured hero in The Sporting Life.
Set Yourself on FireSet Yourself on Fire by Stars
Buy used from: £6.05
Another terrific Canadian indie album. Stars are experts at instantly memorable pop melodies with a bittersweet edge, like on the dark 'One More Night'.
Twin CinemaTwin Cinema by The New Pornographers
Buy new: £7.68 / Used from: £4.84
Amazingly, they've bettered 'Mass Romantic' and 'Electric Version' with another album full of breezy pop classics. Mind you, A.C. Newman could probably fart a great tune so it's no surprise.
PlansPlans by Death Cab For Cutie
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £4.78
This new album from the O.C.-friendly veterans is a real grower. There are a couple of dreary filler tracks but it's mostly pretty, accessible tunes and sadness-tinged indie ballads.
In the Aeroplane Over the SeaIn the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel
Buy new: £7.98
A welcome re-issue for this unsung classic, which probably inspired most of your favourite bands. Its disturbing genius lives on in creepy but gorgeous classics like 'Two Headed Boy'.
In Case We DieIn Case We Die by Architecture in Helsinki
Buy new: £23.09 / Used from: £3.49
Umpteen Australian kids hyped-up on Ribena, banging out great tunes with unusual instruments for an indie pop band, like trumpets and trombone. A weird and wonderful sugar rush from start to finish.
Takk...Takk... by Sigur Rós
Buy used from: £3.98
Another breathtaking album full of epic songs that, even though you can't understand the lyrics, are incredibly life-affirming. Lots of uplifting piano riffs and crashing crescendos.
Clap Your Hands Say YeahClap Your Hands Say Yeah by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Buy used from: £1.67
Typical: we spew out dozens of Talking Heads-esque post-punk bands and then the Yanks kick our arses at it. Already one of 2005's success stories in indie circles, destined for big things in 2006.
The Weight Is a GiftThe Weight Is a Gift by Nada Surf
Buy used from: £10.99
Criminally underrated melodic pop group. Their latest album is really cool, although not quite as good as the masterpiece that was 2003's 'Let Go'. Still full of indie joy though.
Cripple CrowCripple Crow by Devendra Banhart
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £4.98
It's got 22 tracks so naturally they're not all perfect, but you still get your money's worth. Devendra does a Newport '65 on this album, replacing his lone acoustic guitar with a full band.
And the Glass Handed KitesAnd the Glass Handed Kites by Mew
Buy new: £5.08 / Used from: £2.76
Mew are a great singles band, so here we get a few unforgettable moments nestled amongst some decent proggy songs. 'The Zookeeper's Boy' is especially beautiful.
Broken Social SceneBroken Social Scene by Broken Social Scene
Buy used from: £6.18
Play it once, like it, play it ten times and you'll love it. A different but ace follow-up to 'You Forgot It...'. Not out in the UK 'til 2006 but available now on US import. I just had to include it.
ZZ by My Morning Jacket
Buy used from: £7.99
My Morning Jacket have finally perfected their woozy and occasionally rockin' alt-country. 'Z' may be short, but it's eclectic, tuneful and very, very sweet.
I Bet You Look Good on the DancefloorI Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor by Arctic Monkeys
Buy new: £4.89 / Used from: £0.96
Brave, witty social-commentary lryics, catchy basslines and attitude. Currently dealing with mountains of hype. Next up: the backlash.
The Campfire HeadphaseThe Campfire Headphase by Boards of Canada
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £4.69
The Scottish electronica pioneers return .A more organic and warm record than 'Music Has The Rights...' or 'Geogaddi', but slightly lacking either's 'classic' status. Definitely worth buying, though.
How Strange, InnocenceHow Strange, Innocence by Explosions in the Sky
Buy new: £9.48 / Used from: £5.75
Reissue of the incredible post-rock band's first album. It's not listed here, but try and track down a copy of this year's limited-edition EP 'The Rescue', which is even better.
Apologies to the Queen MaryApologies to the Queen Mary by Wolf Parade
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £5.42
Solid, Modest Mouse-esque indie-rock for those who know their stuff from- you guessed it- Canada. A treat for fans of growly guitar pop.
Rehearsing My ChoirRehearsing My Choir by The Fiery Furnaces
Buy new: £10.98 / Used from: £2.99
It might take some time to get used to this one. The Friedberger siblings go one step weirder with an album of duets with their grandmother. Bizarre, often ridiculous, but still charming.
Descended Like VulturesDescended Like Vultures by Rogue Wave
Buy new: £8.79 / Used from: £6.50
Second album of pop hooks from Zach Rogue. October seems to have been the cut-off point for good new albums, but please mail me with suggestions- though I left off the Babyshambles album for a reason.
