Grudge, The [DVD] [2004]Grudge, The [DVD] [2004]
Buy new: £4.88 / Used from: £0.55
Whether you get the remake or the original, both are mostly Japanese (the remake is set in the same house, etc.) and a classic Japanese horror movie. Amalgams, yes, but still chilling.
Ab-Normal Beauty [DVD] [2004]Ab-Normal Beauty [DVD] [2004]
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £1.69
Some of the best cinematography I've seen in asian cinema, this movie is gorgeously shot and makes for compelling viewing, with a rather strange twist at the end.
A Tale Of Two Sisters [DVD] [2004]A Tale Of Two Sisters [DVD] [2004]
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £3.49
This movie is one of those gentle, quiet asian horrors that will scare the bejesus out of you, not with flashes of gruesome monsters, but with inescapable, impending terror. Very clever.
Visitor Q [DVD] [2001]Visitor Q [DVD] [2001]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.84
An excercise in oddity, highlights include a father going to see a whore who turns out to be his daughter, and a real lactating woman breastfeeding husband and daughter. Freaky, but essential.
Ong Bak [DVD] [2003]Ong Bak [DVD] [2003]
Buy used from: £0.95
If Jackie Chan doesn't cut it for you, check out Tony Jaa in Ong-Bak, performing the most amazing martial arts moves you've ever seen, even taking Bruce Lee into account. A modern classic.
Wishing Stairs [DVD]Wishing Stairs [DVD]
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £2.38
Creepy goings on in a Korean high school. This isn't the most inventive horror ever, but it's good enough that you'll be at least hiding behind a hand, if not the sofa.
Audition (Collector's Edition) [DVD] [2001]Audition (Collector's Edition) [DVD] [2001]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £4.55
Half run of the mill, half strange as it comes, Audition will scare you and turn your stomach in equal measure. Great performance from the lead, Ryo Ishibashi.
So Close [DVD] [2002]So Close [DVD] [2002]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.88
This movie is like Mission Impossible, with hot Chinese women instead of Tom Cruise. The theme song, Why Do Birds?, is annoying, but little else in this movie is. Mindless, I'll warrant, but fun.
Bruce Lee 30th Anniversary Commemorative Box Set [DVD] [2003]Bruce Lee 30th Anniversary Commemorative Box Set [DVD] [2003]
Buy used from: £99.99
I don't need to summarize this, do I? Some of the best martial arts movies ever made.
Revenge of the Ninja [DVD] [1983] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]Revenge of the Ninja [DVD] [1983] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Buy used from: £9.88
Classic old martial arts movie, pitting the evil American ninja against the reluctant, trying-to-modernize Japanese ninja. You can guess who wins... An oldie but a goody.
