a good book, will hopefully prove a practical kicking text.5
Geoff Thompson has transfered his time on the door into a basis for his practical, street defense system. I think this book wil help people interesred in training for self defense. Geoff is often very blunt about his dislike for the kicking aspect of the arts, but with his amount of experience, i dont think many people can argue. this book ofers a no-frills account of kicking in street situations. a good reference book to have but then again if you know the basics of low-kicking i wouldnt rush out and buy this book.

Honestly places kicking in its functional context3
Geoff doesn't glorify kicking as martial arts films do, so all you kickers out there may well be disappointed. However, he knows his stuff, and tells the truth for our own good, whether we like it or not. Not so much a stunning book, as one which will make you sit down, think, and then get on with training, but hopefully geared towards a more "real-environment" manner. Definitely worth thinking about, and some good ideas, although, and I can understand why, he has to repeat himself a few times in the book.

Passable...but not great3
Generally I am a big Geoff Thompson fan and a martial artist to boot. I have read pretty much most of his stuff, including the entire "REAL" series. Though his style is engaging (if grammaticaly quite shoddy!) and a lot of his work inspirational, this is probably one of his poorer outings. I'd recommend GT any day of the week to both martial students and otherwise, even on topics beyond the physical, but this really is stretched a bit far. For whatever reason, a lot of his books are repetitive, large font, double spaced and unashamaedly plugging his other titles. Their knowledge is definately a sound investment but I'd recommend Watch My Back - for all the anecdotal evidence of Real Violence you'll ever need, along with Dead Or Alive for all the physical/psychological self protection (situations as well as fisticuffs). I mean, GT's 9 year doorwork leads him to conclude that kicks, on the street, are slow, risky and mostly ineffective so...how many pages are you going to getout of a out of a book, by GT, about kicking on the street..? Erm, hate to say it, but if ever there was a GT book to far...
