Synopsis
A YEAR IN PROVENCE is the four-part adaptation of Peter Mayle's true-life bestseller about the first year he and his wife (played by John Thaw and Lindsay Duncan) spent in a 200-year-old French farmhouse, and the gastronomical splendours they experienced. Originally produced for the A&E cable channel, the volumes are split according to the year's seasons: "Winter," "Spring," "Summer," and "Fall."

Living in France
I know this film is now old hat but living in France the more we watch it the more we know just how true it is for life in general in the more rural areas, workmen do promise that they will come then only arrive when other work permits them to. I particularly enjoyed the fact that a lot of the spoken word was in French which makes it more authentic. I did not like the original television adaptation but have watched the DVD several times and still enjoy it for what it is.
Charming
I saw it when it first came out and thought it was tremendous and it is just as good now! Well acted charming story of two people realizing a dream, but living in reality. I would recommend it to anyone who is contemplating a move.It shows that everything might not go smoothly but it is worth it in the end
Not what I expected
I bought this DVD recently. I had never seen the programme as I had been living abroad a while and am now catching up on the great stuff I missed out on. (Cranford is an absolutely hoot and brilliant). I was really looking forward to watching A Year In Provence. What a disappointment - John Thaw was great but I found the whole thing quite irritating. The scenery was lovely and the idea good, but it really irritated me the way the film makers dealt with the problem of language barriers. What they decided is that if you speak to someone slowly in a language they do not understand then, by a miracle, they can comprehend it. Strange that. I found it all rather farcical.
