Product Description

At more than twenty times the size of North America's Everglades, the Brazilian Pantanal is the world's largest wetland, and a wilderness area of international significance. With one of the most spectacular concentrations of wildlife on earth, and rare and endangered species almost impossible to find elsewhere, this hugely productive environment is an increasingly popular ecotourism destination. Theo Allofs' superb photography is accompanied by text written by scientists from Conservation International. In it, they detail the driving forces of the Pantanal ecosystem, including the annual cycle of flood and drought that has created the mosaic of forests, grassland, wetland and rivers; the history of the people who make the Pantanal their home; and issues surrounding development and conservation. Evocative and informative, "Pantanal" is a beautiful exploration of this captivating and truly magical region.

Nice coffee table book4
For the price (I bought a copy when it was £16.24) this is a lovely coffee table book. The large size and hefty weight allows for some nice large images to be displayed, though in some cases better use could have been made of the available space. The photos are generally of a high quality, although I personally would have liked to have seen a bit more variety. A large number of shots are of caiman and people (in fact a whole chapter is devoted to each). There are quite a few atmospheric sunset/sillhoette shots, but personally I would have preferred less of these and more of the smaller birds (most of the birds shown are unsurprisingly the storks, herons, egrets and parrots/toucans). There are also only two photos of Jaguar and no other cats are shown. There is however a reasonably good selection of other mammals including the giant otters, howler monkeys, coati, tamandua and a giant anteater with a baby on it's back.

The text is nicely detailld and its easy to dip in and out of. This covers conservation, economy and biodiversity of the pantanal as well as the aforementioned chapters on caiman and people of the pantanal. Given the price the book is now being sold at I consider it to be well worth the money, and I understand it is sold in aid of Conservation International too. Great to whet the appetite if you are planning a trip to this region!

Pantanal - muito bonito5
This is a fantastic book that I bought after I had seen a documentary on the Pantanal and was planning a trip there.
It is crammed with many fantastic pictures and lots of information on the animals, people and places in the Pantanal. The only thing that is more spectacular than the book itself is going there !
